Solomon Raj is a Lutheran Pastor from Kerala, South India.   He has lectured in many parts of the world, particularly in America, and Germany. In 1987-88 he did research and lectured at the Selly Oak Colleges in Birmingham, UK.  For many years he has used Batiks and Woodcuts to portray Gospel themes and stories in an Indian style, but also a style that is uniquely his own.  In November 1999 a small group of Christians Aware members were privileged to participate in a workshop led by him at Hothorpe Hall, near Leicester.

Some of  his batiks and poems are shown below.  They illustrate various passages from St.Luke's Gospel on the theme of  Liberation. The original  batiks, hand made by Solomon Raj, are approx 2 x 1.5 metres and may be bought for £200 each.  Click on any thumbnail picture to load the picture into full screen.

Darkness and Sin

Darkness And Sin

Liberation from Darkness  Luke 2.30-32

Tamas'oma Jyothirgamaya
Lead me from Darkness into Light
So prayed the sages.
Light is knowledge
Light is wisdom
Light is a sign of immeasurable holiness.
When God made the dance of creation
Light was born first.

So give me the gift of Light
Let darkness be cast behind
and let the universe be awakened
into that glorious morning
which shall not be darkened
by another night

Oppressors and
the Oppressed.

Liberation from Oppression  Luke 1.52-53

There are the oppressed
and there are the oppressors.
Unjust structures made by Man.
Some get rich at the cost of the poor
and some get fat from the perspiration of the weak.

Classes and castes -
rungs for the high
and crushing berths for the poor -
these are the fruits
that the tree of sin bears.

The redeemer will bring justice to the poor one day
taking his place with those who are oppresse

The Lord Remembers
the Hungry
Liberation From Hunger (Thumbnail)

Liberation from Hunger    Luke 22.19

Break the bread, break the bread
share your bowl of rice
there are many hungry souls around.
Give your cup of water to a thirsty child
and your reward will be great.

Break your bread, break your bread.
Whenever you share your bread
and part with your cup
there is always communion.
God is surely present in
that bread and the cup.

More Love and More Forgiveness

More Love and More Forgivness (thumbnail)

Liberation from Guilt  Luke 7.47

The more my sins
the more is my love.
The more my love
the more is the forgivness
I receive.

The sun shines on the icy peaks
and the snow melts.
The tears flow,
the dirt and the dust get washed away down the hill.
My head touches the Lord's feet
and the fervent prayer
rises like a costly perfume's
captivating aroma

The Fourfold Bondage

Liberation from Bondage

Liberation from Bondages   Luke 4.18

Let the blind see and the lame walk.
Let the prisoner leap his way into freedom.
The poor and the hungry,
the oppressed and the downtrodden.
The casteless and the cast out
shall hear the good news of hope.
This shall be the coming
of the kingdom of God.

Demons and Devils

Demons (Thumbnail)

Liberation from Demonic Powers   Luke 8.33

A demon in the house
a devil in the field
a ghost on the tree
and a spirit in the bush -
people in many lands
still live in the fear
of demons.
We all need to be freed
from demonic powers
from demons that bother us today -
demons, may be, of a different kind.

Needle in the Haystack

Needle In The Haystack (Thumbnail)

Liberation from too many Cares    Luke 10. 41-42

Family, children and
wealth to enjoy -
these were considered once
the ideals one should work for.
But things change,
the world becomes more complex.
Goals and values shift,
desires and ambitions keep expanding,
and in the haystack of too many cares
humanity lost the needle of life's compass

Body and Soul

Liberation from Bodily Concerns   Luke 12.22-23

What shall we eat
and what shall we drink

to keep ourselves alive?
what shall we wear
to keep our bodies from freezing
or to hide our shame?

Hunger, cold, sickness and death
are razing  the ground.
Children are dying,
masses of people are starving.
May we think of the hungry
and the naked
before we ask - What shall we eat,
or what shall we drink.

Burdens of this
World

Burdens (Thumbnail)

Liberation from Burdens   Luke 11.46

There are somethings which we know
and others which we do not know.
We know there is suffering in this world,
But we do not know why.
The question why
shall fall silent, said a saintly man,
because it has found its answer.
We wait for God's liberation from suffering.
We wait for God's answer.

Gentle Brother Death

gentledeath (Thumbnail)

Liberation from Fear of Death   Luke 24. 1-2

At the time of death
where does the soul make its journey?
To the land of the fathers,
or the land of the Gods?
Into the night or into the day?
Into the cloud or into the lightning?
Into the full moon or the new moon?
Into the dark fortnight
or the bright fortnight?
We do not know all the answers.
But we surely believe
that death is the doorway to a new life
more glorious and more wonderful.
