OTHER ORGANISATIONS INVOLVED

IN RESPONSIVE TOURISM

Rather than give here a long list or organisations, we have chosen to mention a few key agencies through which a range of other contacts can be made, both in Britain and internationally:

a) Tourism Concern Network, Southlands College, Roehampton Institute, Wimbledon Parkside, London SW19 5NN

Tourism Concern has a growing national membership, £10 a year, newsletter is produced for subscribers at £5 a year. Tourism Concern's prime role is to point up instances of bad tourism practice and also to signpost a whole range of more wholesome tourism initiatives in UK and abroad which aim at fairer, more mutual, respectful relations between hosts and travellers, and also respect for the environment and cultural heritage of tourist areas.

b) Travel Friends International, c/o Interface Tourism, Moulsham Mill, Parkway, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 7PX.

Has broadly similar aims to Tourism Concern -indeed it is member of Tourism Concern. However, TFI is especially concerned to help would-be travellers to prepare carefully for their holiday, and to help them reflect on their travels with others afterwards. Besides facilitating its own travel programme, TFI organises preparation workshops for groups going to various destinations, on request. Wherever possible these are residential e.g. over a weekend.

c) Centre for the Advancement of responsive Travel, 70 Dry Hill Park Road, Tunbridge, Kent, TIN 3BX

CART is a non-profit-making personal consultancy which aims primarily to research and publicise credible travel and tourism alternatives which do not adversely "alter" the "natives". CART also produces the 'Credo for the Caring Traveller' which - in just four/ five pages - signposts the traveller to a number of key issues - to do with travel motives and attitudes, constructively critical dealings with tour operators and officials, and tourist behaviour in general - which nurture "ethical" travel.
