On Fasting

The fast is suitable for people aged 18 years or over. People aged 16 to 18 years should fast for 24 hours only.

People who are unable to fast or are under 16 years may join the sponsored silence or miss a meal.

 When preparing to fast, eat smaller amounts of food for a few days to prepare the body for change. During the fast drink water or unsweetened fruit juice, or coffee or tea without milk (a drop of water may be added for taste).

 Carry on with normal work but be very careful if you operate machinery or drive a car.

 Do not drink alcohol. Try not to give into feelings of hunger.

Stop fasting if you feel ill. At the end of the fast plan a light meal. Eg: bread and honey, scrambled eggs etc.

 If the group is fasting together it is good to end the fast with a shared meditation and a meal at midnight or dawn.
