Jerusalem:

Symbol and Reality

 Professor Bernard Wasserstein

Lecture at the University of Leicester on Weds 28 March 2001
A Report by Katy Hadddelsey

On my way to this fifth Gaza Vermes Lecture, I heard one more depressing item of news from Israel  - that there had been another suicide attack by a Palestinian, which had resulted in massive retaliation by the Israeli forces – so I was more eager to hear what a specialist might have to say on the subject of Jerusalem.

Though Jewish himself, Professor Wasserstein presented the historical reality that all three monotheistic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – have just claims to the Holy City.  In each case, he presented historical facts and perspectives, citing ancient and more modern quotations on behalf of each religion.  As the resident professor giving the vote of thanks said, in the richly detailed tapestry he had described, “historians can offer a small cool voice”.

Professor Wasserstein was able to sign copies of his newly published book: “Jerusalem Divided –the Struggle for the Holy City” which shows how the religious devotion of masses of Christians, Muslims and Jews has been exploited for the ulterior purposes of many powers.

Divided Jerusalem – the Struggle for the Holy City
